Francisco Albuquerque
Francisco Albuquerque is one of the leading figures in contemporary Madeira wine. Born in Funchal, on the island of Madeira, he studied production engineering at the Santarém Higher Agricultural School, from which he graduated in 1987. Upon returning to the archipelago in the late 1980s, he gradually dedicated his career to understanding, preserving, and promoting Madeira wine.
He joined the Madeira Wine Company in the 1990s and became one of its key figures. As Director of Oenology, he was responsible for the company’s premium fortified wines—particularly those under the Blandy’s brand—as well as the Madeiran table wines under the Atlantis brand, which marked a new phase in the archipelago’s wine production.
His work is distinguished by a rare balance between fidelity to history and a commitment to innovation. Through his study of native grape varieties, Madeira wine-making methods, and the island’s unique viticultural characteristics, he helps bridge the centuries-old traditions of canteiro and estufagem with a contemporary approach to oenological precision. He also contributes to scientific research on Madeira wine.
Internationally recognized, Francisco Albuquerque has received several major awards. Notably, he was named “Fortified Winemaker of the Year” at the International Wine & Spirit Competition in 2006, 2007, and 2008; received the Len Evans Trophy in 2007; and was honored in Portugal as Winemaker of the Year for fortified wines and as Winemaker of the Year. In 2026, he was once again named Winemaker of the Year in the fortified wines category by the Prémios Grandes Escolhas.
