Oliver Spanier
Hans founded the Battenfeld-Spanier estate in 1991, when he was just 20 years old. The family's vineyards and those of the neighboring Battenfeld estate formed the basis.
At a time when German viticulture was declining in quality and marked by mass-produced wine, H. O. Spanier focused on uncompromising quality.
Since its foundation, the estate has worked ecologically, and has been certified since 1993. Healthy vines and soils, according to H. O. Spanier, are essential for translating terroir into wine. The estate's biodynamic approach has been recognized by its inclusion in "La Renaissance des Appellations".
In 2008, Hans became a member of the VDP, the association of classified German wineries. Thanks to H.O., the long-forgotten vineyards with their arid, limestone-rich soils in the Zell Valley and Wonnegau, in particular Frauenberg, Kreuzberg and Zellerweg at Schwarzer Herrgott, are among Germany's finest wines and terroirs, and are sought after worldwide.
Battenfeld-Spanier wines were the very first dry Rieslings to be marketed in Bordeaux.
Hans Oliver Spanier is also responsible for the wines of Kühling-Gillot, the wine estate owned by his wife Carolin Spanier-Gillot's family.
