Philippe completed his secondary education at the Collège de Passy-Buzenval in Rueil-Malmaison and the Collège Saint-Jacques in Joigny.
He began his sommelier career at La Reine Pédauque restaurant in Paris from 1972 to 1973. He then worked as sommelier at the Ledoyen restaurant in Paris from 1973 to 1977.
From 1977 to 2015, he held the positions of head sommelier and then general manager at Restaurant Laurent in Paris.
Between 1978 and 1985, he taught at Steven Spurrier's Wine Academy. From 1990 to 2002, he was a lecturer at the École Polytechnique.
Philippe Bourguignon is also the author of several publications:
In 1978, he was named "France's Best Sommelier".
Since 1995, Philippe Bourguignon has been treasurer and member of the French Wine Academy. He has also been a member of the European Grand Jury since 1996.
